This page provides information on the research questions coming from multiple European projects that have been addressed using the PHIRI methodology for federated analysis which allows sensitive data to be mobilized to respond multiple research queries in multiple sites, while preserving GDPR principles.

COVID- 19 direct or indirect impact on vulnerable population

Research question
Has the COVID-19 pandemic changed existing patterns of non-COVID-19 health care utilisation and mortality for vulnerable populations within and between countries? This is based around answering the indirect effects of the pandemic on population health. 
Cohort
Any patients 18 years old or older, with a hospital episode with a main diagnosis of any of the conditions included in the cohort definition (i.e. heart attack, stroke, hip or knee replacements, or severe trauma) from 2019-01-01 until today.

Research question
Has there been any increase in surgical and/or co-adjuvant (i.e. radiotherapy, chemotherapy, inmunotherapy) treatments delay in elegible women diagnosed of breast cancer, as a consequence of the COVID-19 crisis? 
Cohort
Women, 18 years old or older, with a first diagnosis of breast cancer between 2017-01-01 until today.

Cohort
All births as defined within each data source locally between 2017-01-01 until today. All births with a gestational age of 22 weeks or more or when gestational age is missing with a birthweight of 500 g or more.

COVID-19 related changes in population mental health

Research question
Has there been any increase in individuals with mental health risk factors or mental disease, as a consequence of the COVID19 crisis? This case study will measure changes in population mental health associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cohort
Any patient 18 years old or older with a contact with the healthcare system between 2017-01-01 until 2020-12-31 due to a mental health condition (i.e. with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, Other depresive disorders, or Anxiety.

Research question
How effective have the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination programmes been in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections?
Cohort
All people eligible to be vaccinated (from 5 to 115 years old, included) or with, at least, one dose of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (any of the available brands) having or not a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection.
