WHO, UNICEF and the Ministry of Health Care of Kazakhstan are hosting a global ministerial event to reaffirm the importance of primary health care (PHC) in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and other health emergencies.

During this session, WHO/Europe will present the publication “Strengthening population health surveillance: a tool for selecting indicators to signal and monitor the wider effects of the COVID-19 pandemic” as part of the Seminar/Webinar series “Better Data for Better Health.”

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a rapid rise in the use of remote consultations by telephone and video link. Remote consultations have proved important as a way of supporting non-severe COVID-19 patients, reducing pressure on inpatient care, and maintaining access to routine services.

Some countries in Europe introduced apps to support contract tracing, which is an essential tool in the prevention of COVID-19 transmission. These apps raised both technical and policy challenges. Technologically, it proved harder than expected to design apps for this purpose.

Countries have introduced lockdowns to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim is to prevent transmission by limiting population movement and curtailing many social and economic activities.

This series draws on the COVID-19 Health System Response Monitor (HSRM) which collects and organizes up-to-date information on how countries are responding to the COVID-19 crisis across the whole European Region.
