Wastewater monitoring is used to monitor the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Austria. It provides information on the temporal development of the viral load and the relative proportion of virus variants in the observed regions, independent of human testing. The information, in conjunction with other epidemiological data, provides a situation report that allows for an assessment of the overall situation. Based on this situation report, authorities and task forces can make decisions on whether and what measures are necessary to limit or prevent further spread, and subsequently check their effectiveness.
