    Description

The Estonian Myocardial Infarction Register (EMIR) has been founded in 2012 with the aim to improve the diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and facilitate the planning of healthcare services for AMI as well as conduct epidemiological research.

EMIR is supported by the scientific board consisting of 10 leading specialists in the field: cardiologists from the Estonian Society of Cardiology, representatives from main hospitals and one representative of the state research institute.

EMIR is an electronic database including all hospitalized cases of AMI in Estonia (International Classification of Diseases 10th version codes I21.0-I21.9 and I22.0-I22.9). Submitting data of patients hospitalized due to AMI is mandatory for all hospitals. There are 20 hospitals submitting data. Three hospitals are 24/7 PCI hospitals. In addition, once a week PCI is available in two other hospitals.

EMIR includes the following data: demographic characteristics, previous cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, clinical presentation, important time points commonly used as quality indicators of AMI managements, use of medications and interventional therapy during hospitalization, complications incl. mortality during hospitalization, recommendation of medications for outpatient use.

The use of the personal identification number (PIN) enables linkage with other national registries (e.g. Population Register, Health Insurance Fund database and Estonian Causes of Death Register).
